STANDEN House is appealing for new volunteers as it embarks on a huge restoration project.

Standen is the National Trust's Arts and Crafts Movement gem on the outskirts of East Grinstead. With a budget of £500,000 to spend over five years, its gardens are being restored to their former glory, in keeping with the vision of their creator, Margaret Beale.

A team of 40 staff are supported by more than 400 volunteers at Standen, but more are being sought to help.

Standen's volunteer coordinator Peter Smith said: "Volunteering your time is a great way to learn new skills, develop your CV, get work experience, meet new people and expand your horizons. With major restoration projects under way, Standen's outdoor volunteer team is playing a crucial role in the garden restoration work and there are opportunities to get involved in the kitchen garden, garden maintenance and, yes, even weeding, too."
