A GROUP of schoolchildren explored Ashdown Forest in search of wildlife.

But while most forest users are content with spotting a deer, a stoat or a nightjar, these visitors were determined to dig a little deeper.

The pupils, from Framfield Primary School, near Uckfield, got the opportunity to go bug hunting after winning a wildlife illustration contest held by the Conservators of Ashdown Forest.

They were taken on their journey by forest ranger Rich Allum and Lyn Merrick of Gatekeeper Educational, which supported the event last Tuesday, before creating clay animal sculptures in the afternoon.

Ashdown Forest Centre director Pat Buesnel said: "Through our education programme, the competition is one of the ways to encourage children to explore the forest and discover and appreciate the beauty and complexity of nature."
