POP star Peter Andre's East Grinstead cafe has failed to impress environmental health inspectors, who rated it one of the worst food outlets in the town.

The Mysterious Girl singer was submerged in a fan frenzy when he opened the New York Coffee Club in London Road last November.

But the business scored just one out of five in the Food Standards Agency's food hygiene ratings.

The reality TV personality has defended his new business venture and says he expects it to achieve a four or five star rating when it is next scrutinised.

The last inspection, carried out by Mid Sussex District Council officers on February 16, found that some "major improvements" were necessary.

But director Danny Andre – Peter's brother – said everything is now up to scratch.

"Everything is spotless in there," he told the Courier & Observer.

"It always has been. It was just a couple of things, that got rectified the same afternoon."

Of the 242 East Grinstead businesses inspected, only two scored lower than the cafe, while 20 other outlets received the same rating.

The district council decided in April last year to make its assessments of standards in shops, restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways and hotels available to the public

In judging each business, inspectors consider how food is handled, cooked and stored; the condition of the building; cleanliness; layout and ventilation; and how paperwork is managed.

Gemma Wheatley, from Peter Andre's management company, said: "It was nothing to do with any problems with dirtiness or cleanliness, it was purely mechanical.

"They asked us to put cladding around the back of the tiles and the sink was in the wrong place."

She added: "Peter takes these kind of things very seriously."

A second unannounced inspection at the New York Coffee Club will take place between May and August.
